sure, if the program pushes too hard on the cpu, the console will crash...but that's why sony programmed it for their console intelligently - not to do that. (my folding@home is on all day and night whenever i'm not playing a game..and hasn't overheated or crashed once.)
sony does not have backdoor access to the ps3, especially not when it's turned off. what exactly would they be interested in? usage statistics, sure, but hell, logging onto the PSNetwork probably does that for them. (and why shouldn't it?)
