I think you're right in that the system is expensive and this alone will put many potential buyers off.
However, 'overpriced' is not necessarily the correct word in this case. It refers to something costing more than its value. In the PS3's case it showcases a LOT of special new technology, is way advanced over any other gaming platform (including $10,000 bespoke gaming PCs!) and includes Blu-Ray, the next-gen storage format to replace DVD.
In that light light the console could equally be reffered to as a 'Bargain'.
Remember, they are making a loss, in fact, on each console sold.
I think it comes down to affordability. Its expensive for the average punter and a bargain for the wealthy or highly motivated games player.
I concur with a previous post on this forum which mentioned that all-in entertainment systems are the future (i.e. HD TV that has an integrated Blu-Ray/HD_DVD, Cable, PC and Games machine in one.)
The PS3 is a very giant step towards that future.
