It's over-rated just in the marketing sense. It's a very well made game and some of the shit that I've noticed, just the really small details that they incorporated into the game just makes it so worth buying.
I still play COD4, and I'll will continue to play it, but when I get in my GTA mood I'm glad I own it.
To be honest i think it is a little overrated like the whole online thing, i think could be better. The Story mode is awesome though so even though its overrated its only overrated by about a half star

Grand Theft Auto IV is just as overrated as any other game that people wait 1 1/2 years for it's release.
What did you expect?
Halo 3 did that same damn thing, trying to get the media involved and what not. It's just marketing.
too much hype can kill a game, too little will not get the game enough credit...so difficult with the marketing techniques to get it perfect, everyone just advertises and fans get excited.
