Help needed please

Hi all you will have to bear with me cause I am old.
I bought my children a PS3 for xmas and we cant get it to work.
We put the game in and all we get is a black screen with all the symbols at the top. How do you get the game to play or load? I have been to reset original configs but no joy, Plugged, unplugged, inserted disc,ejected, reinserted but still no joy just the black screen and symbols.
When I click on the controller icon I get 3 options data, memory, and another usless thing.
Has anyone any idea how my kids can play a game on this console or do I have to take it back to the shop?

well if you want to play a game, on the black background with symbols. You find a ps3 controller symbol then go down and it'll show a CD or the title of your game. Then press X and there you go

put the game in. go to games. go down to where the game thing is. click on it BAM!!!!! ur playing

This will help, just go here, then go down and press X. Your child will be playing.

Thanks for the advice guys but even when we do as u suggest we dont get the cd icon just the 3 below it, is it time to take it back to the shop?

im a little confused now. ok this is what u should do. turn the ps3 on (its on right). sigh in to ur created account (u have to create an account) *

*u can also make a playstation account after u make this account. that is optional though. but if u want to play online it is a must

after that u go to the games icon go down and MAKE SURE UR GAME IS IN and the disk should show. be sure to be under the games icon. and go down about 3 or 4. there u go. if this does not work ps3 might have to go back. u should get a new one for free
