The great UK vs US Server debate...

Well, I have found out some of the strange things going on with games and servers... and its still confusing...

As some of you may know, I have a UK and a Japanese PS3 console...

Now, games on these consoles are affected differently but I will concentrate on COD3 and Resistance...

Here are interesting observations:

I have 2 COD3 games, one that I bought form the US and one I bought from the UK recently.
Now, if I play the US game on either of the consoles then it goes to the US server... If I play the UK game on either console, it goes to the UK server. The good news is I can play in both COD3 events and anybody else out there can logically do the same if you get the other region's COD3 game !
Of course, I have to remember to put the right one in....

Now, we already know PS3 game Blu-Ray disks are multi region BUT we can also safely assume from this that they are still region coded. Activision obviously programmed it in to be this way.
Its a shame we cant pick which server to play on....

Now this is where it gets confusing.....

When I play my US Resistance Fall of Man game on my Japanese console it ONLY goes to the Japanese server and I can only play against the Japanese (and perhaps a few of us who have an import like me...).

However, when I play my US Resistance Fall of Man on my UK console it goes to the UK server.
I cannot get on the US server at all..

Now, this is different to the COD3 scenario.
In COD3 the servers you go on are down to the Disk and in resistance it is down to the console! How weird is that?

I really would like to play Resistance on the American servers as most of my buddies are American due to my COD3 playing over the last 4 months.

I have tried signing up as US account on both consoles to no avail. It doesnt affect anything.

It must be down to local ISP connections. Theoretically, it must be possible to disguise an International IP , then again it might not be.

Just thought it was interesting how the publishers and SONY have different set-ups.....

I prefer the COD3 scenario as it at least gives us the choice of being able to play on all servers (we just have to buy another game)...

Annoyingly, I bought the UK COD3 game as I was hoping to play against my sons on the other PS3 upstairs online!! But, its not possible. I therefore need a third COD3 game So, if anybody has one cheap, either US or UK, let me know!

ha... nice post!

It doesn't seem to make sense.

I'm not sure its made things any clearer though....
Maybe whereever you are in the world affects the Firmware you download which in turn affects some of these things... I dunno, give up..

Re: The great UK vs US Server debate...

yea i think it has to do with the firmware, or even an unchangeable/nonupdateable part of the system. basically, it's hardwired in that your JAP console is JAP, and no US firmware update can change that.

i think you're right about the difference between COD3 and R:FoM has to do with where the game looks for this information. COD3 relies on the disc's information, whereas R:FoM gets data from the firmware.

one thing to clear up for me, as i should be renting COD3 soon. are there US/Can servers AND seperate UK servers (as well as other regions)? i thought i heard that the servers were worldwide. (So me being in the US could play people in the UK) Maybe that's a connection option as well.

i think there should be a uk/europe scoreboard. As theres only a few europe members and a lot of us members. would be an unfair advantage for them.

Are you talking about the Hall of Fame leaderboards at PS3leaderboard.com ?

What do you mean..?
That as there are not so many players (at the moment) that the same players will win and easily get the maximum points to rise quickly to the top...

Might be a case there..

Though if there are an equal number of events then surely its all fair.
If anything the US has had a 4 month headstart on the global leaderboards...

Certainly, there will have to be seperate leaderboards for the European COD3 and Resistance/motorstorm events...
