Console very noisy

I noticed that after operating the system for about twenty minutes or so, the PS3 console became very noisy. It sounded like a vacuum cleaner. But I think I've solved the problem.

In the operating instructions, it tells us NOT to keep the console in an enclosed environment, it needs ventilation. I had the unit in an enclosed cabinet, and when I opened it, I noticed it was very hot. I have since cut out a section of the cabinet backing and installed a vent fan. I haven't experienced the problem since. Has anyone else noticed this?

Well, it seems you at least spotted what the problem is.
Like a PC or similar electrical item that outputs a lot of power it needs very good ventilation.

I would say you will be okay so long as you allow an airflow around the system. There is a very small chance that you damaged the console and this will become apparent if the problem returns or is indeed still appearing to kick out a huge amount of heat.

It is more likely that all is now okay as the PS3 was thoroughly tested in far more extreme circumstances. It is normal to produce a LOT of heat.

For those that really must have their console hidden away then there is a manufacturer producing an add-on intercooler which bolts on to the PS3 to help with cooling.

I hope that helps!

You need to check it again.

It should be almost perfectly quiet with a very faint hum if you put your ear to it.

The PS3 id surprisingly quiet actually, much better that the 360...

Mine only makes a noise when it first reads a Blu-ray disk.

am sure yours isn't damaged in any way. It can probably withstand a lot more than anybody could throw at it. The stores have them hidden behind a perspex cover in the Kiosks.... They seem okay. I am not even sure if they turn off each night !!

Evolution: I appreciate your information. Like I said, I rigged up a temporary exhaust fan, but it would be nice to have something on a more permanent basis. Unfortunately, the only available space I have for the console is in the enclosed cabinet . Here is the link for the manufacturer you mentioned: http://www.nyko.com/nyko/news/?c=65&i=310. According to them the product sells for about $20.00, but it doesn't seem like they sell it directly. I haven't been able to locate a retailer who has it. Do you know of anyone who carries it?

Yeah, I ran it several times after that and have not experienced the problem. Hopefully, it didn't do any permanent damage.

The intercooler does make sense if anyone wants to place it anywhere or has to placeit on top of other items because of space issues.

I notice you can get a little base that gives the PS3 better stability when standing it upright... Cool idea.

I've noticed that the unit does stand upright. Are you saying there is an additional stand that it can sit on? Do you have a link for that? We do have another room in which we'll also be using the PS3.

Thanks

Actually 90% of all units I've seen in cabinets in stores have been frozen (crashed). These units need space just like any other high power electronic device. Keep it cool!

Yeah. I often wonder how on earth they manage to keep them operating in such unfriendly surroundings.
Of course, security is an issue but that bespoke store Kiosk made no sense at all.

heat kills performance in most types of machinery. Its a no brainer really.
