1.31 FW Update
can ps3 updates work on any ps3 consoles or are there are specific updates required for certain models i.e jap, American etc.
also the 1.31 FW Update if i install this will it play ps2 games?

I think most of the PS2 game patches have already rolled out so if you cant plat the ones you have then it may be too late...
As for updates..... Well, you'll automatically get the update from the server you originally connected to... One of the Japanese updates was indeed different to the US one and the European updates will be different again. There is a way to download a particular region update but I'd stick to whatever you have been doing.

Stick with the FW region version of your PS3 so if you have a Jap. PS3 use Jap fw update because unlike PSP i havn't read anything about different region FW on other PS3 yet.
