About the game
It's fair to say that in the digital world we live in, the funky blue hedgehog known as Sonic, who celebrates his 15th birthday this year, is something of a gaming icon.
According to a recent survey done by SEGA, 86% of people who have ever picked up a video game have played at least one Sonic game somewhere down the line. With 39 titles already under his belt, and 44 million units sold worldwide, Sonic has been through a lot since his humble beginnings on the Master System of the early 90s.
Having featured on almost every games console from the MegaDrive to the PlayStation 2, Sonic is now making his mark on next-gen technology. 'Sonic the Hedgehog' on PlayStation 3 delivers the most exciting Sonic title we can remember for a long time. As well as the trademark phenomenally fast paced gameplay, there's a great story line, free-roaming fun and a brand new baddie who's shaping up to be quite a treat!
The evil Dr Eggman (or Dr Robotnik to any old-skool Sonic fans!) has captured a princess who has the power of bringing peace and harmony to the universe. Sonic must rescue her and defeat Eggman, otherwise the world we be destroyed! However, this time there is a new villain standing in his way, and he's more dangerous than ever before…
Enter Silver the Hedgehog, a creature of looks comparable to our hero Sonic, with the gift of telekinesis – that's MIND POWER to you and me! Silver can lift objects with his mind and hurl parts of the landscape at anyone or anything who gets in his way. He can destroy bridges and reflect bullets, as well as having the power to hover over obstacles. Truly he's the most appealing bad-guy the series has offered us to date. When you start the game he'll be there to stand in your way, but eventually you'll be able to control him and play through the game as Silver, taking control of all his cool moves!
Fans will be pleased to hear that Shadow will be returning as a playable character, using guns and vehicles in a massively awesome way. Tails, Knuckles and Rouge make a welcome comeback as well, though gamers won't be able to play as them in the game. They will be there to help out Sonic if he ever gets in to a spot of bother, using their unique powers of flight and strength to aid our blue, spiky friend.
Emeralds will play an important role as ever, and items will be available to find and upgrade. The gameplay is fast-paced, furious and frenetic, easily the most high-octane game in the series. There is a free-roaming element to the game, and as each level in the game can be played as either Sonic, Shadow or Silver, the game lasts three times longer than you would expect!
This is the re-invention of Sonic. All the best bits from the older Sonic games have been included, tweaked and improved, not least the sound-barrier breaking speed of gameplay we all know and love. Sonic is back, and this time it's serious…
